Greece Passes MMJ Legislation, NY Prohibit Delta-8, & Oregon Issue Mandatory Recall

In #NewYork, government officials #prohibit all #hemp-derived #THC variants, including the increasingly popular and controversial #Delta8 THC compound. The policy was issued under the state #health department’s updated hemp regulations, which also loosened labelling restrictions as well as upheld a ban on #smokable hemp products like #prerolls, while permitting the sale of dry flower itself. Delta-8 THC, as well as the more recently developed #Delta10, are naturally-occurring minor #cannabinoids with effects similar to those seen from #marijuana’s main psychoactive ingredient, #Delta9 THC, though with more mild intoxication and a slower onset. Because the variants can also be manufactured synthetically from hemp-derived #CBD, many producers assumed its legality under the #2018 #Farm Bill. New York now follows #Colorado, #Washington and #Vermont in banning hemp products containing chemically modified cannabinoids. Other states, like #Utah, #Oregon, and #Kentucky have implemented policies targeting Delta 8 specifically, while the DEA added the compound to its list of controlled substances. The reactions to New York’s new rule have varied, with some retailers, like #Empire CBD, closing all six of its upstate locations and moving operations to Florida. In contrast, Gary’s #Indoor #Garden Supply and CBD Center in Rome will attempt to continue supplying #naturally-produced Delta 8 products. Varying guidelines across different areas of the country are leading many industry experts to call for standardized #federal regulations concerning the controversial cannabinoid.

In #Oregon, regulators issue a mandatory recall of #cannabis #vape products over ingredients sourced from out of state. The Oregon #Liquor Control #Commission, which oversees the state’s licensed #marijuana market, pulled vape cartridges sold under the “Native” and “#Naked #Extracts” labels after the licensee refused to do so voluntarily. This comes after an OLCC investigation revealed that the offending products contained marijuana-derived #terpenes produced and distributed by California-based specialty company True #Blue. The #business not only violated state law prohibiting the use of ingredients from an entity not licensed in Oregon, but also added the terpenes after the products had already undergone mandatory #testing for #potency, #pesticides, and #solvents. While a specific number of products was not disclosed, the recall affects all those #manufactured after #October of #2019. In response, “Naked Extracts” president and #CEO Connie Harrell calls the OLCC’s actions “unprecedented,” “heavy-handed”, and not designed to protect #consumers or the #industry. While there have not been any reports of illness associated with the vape products so far, customers are encouraged to either dispose of them or return them to the retailer where they were purchased.

Overseas, #Greece legalizes the #sale and #production of #medical #marijuana, following four years of regulatory delays. The new legislation, which was filed by the #Greek #Ministry of #Development and Investments and passed #parliament by an 158 to 33 #vote, amends the country’s existing laws by rescinding restrictions on domestic #MMJ sales as well as exports. Key policy changes include abolishing the state #monopoly on product #sales by allowing distribution through #pharmacies, #clinics and #hospitals, permitting #exports of material with more than .2 percent #THC, and the removal of various other regulatory barriers. One of the most significant developments expected to promote #international #trade is the elimination of Greek circulation authorization requirements, subjecting exports only to regulation by the country of importation. Though businesses from #nations like the #US, #Israel, and #Saudi #Arabia had collectively #invested more than 400 million dollars into Greek #cannabis production #enterprises by #2020, previous obstacles like these have prevented the country from transforming into the medical cannabis #cultivation hub it was once predicted to become. While the recent legislation is being celebrated by many Greek #politicians, some, like opposition party #spokesman Alexis Haritsis, criticize the law as incomplete, as it only authorizes the production of dry #flower and not extracts. He has pledged to push for the relevant change in order to make the #meditterranean country more #competitive on a #global #scale.
