In #Canada, #Thrive #Cannabis opens the country’s first #farm-gate #marijuana store in Simcoe, #Ontario. The 1,120 square-foot shop, which is initially offering curbside pickup amid ongoing #coronavirus concerns, is located adjacent to the licensed producer’s cannabis farm and indoor facility. In addition to Thrive’s own products including dry #flower and concentrate under their Greybeard brand name, the store will feature select goods from other local #cultivators as well. Thrive, who received their Retail Store Authorization on 4/20, is one of 14 producers who applied to conduct farm-gate sales in Ontario, with the #Royal Cannabis Supply Company and Level Up Infusions also planning to open their own shops in the near future. Some applicants, like Muskoka Grown and AB Labs, have stopped pursuing the authorization process, due to burdensome regulations that would make the move unprofitable. Because farm-gate licenses don’t allow producers to sell directly to #customers, and instead require products to go through a virtual buyback procedure with the government-run Ontario Cannabis Store, many business owners aren’t seeing an advantage over opening an off-site retail location. Canopy Growth are also delaying their farm-gate operations, but only because of the #pandemic-prompted closure of their Smith Falls Visitor Center. While Ontario is currently the country’s only province to engage in such sales, #British #Columbia is expected to launch its own farm-gate program in 2022.
