Tilray focus plan, Missouri Cannabis lawmakers, and German Health Insurance

Are franchises the future of cannabis retail? Denver’s One Cannabis sure hopes so. They plan to help franchisees set up marijuana retail businesses and are set to go public on the Canadian Securities Exchange, becoming the latest U.S. MJ business to tap into the Canadian capital market through a reverse takeover.

In Florida, lawmakers approved a bill to end the state’s ban on smokable marijuana. The move is expected to provide a significant boost in sales for the already booming 250 million dollar-a-year market.

Controversy in New York. The New York Medical Cannabis Association recently expelled multistate firm MedMen from its ranks, after a lawsuit alleged racist, homophobic, and sexist comments were made by one of the company’s CEOs. MedMen says they haven’t been notified of the action, and as far as they know, are still part of the organization.

In Missouri, lawmakers vow to license more medical cannabis businesses if the first wave of 300 doesn’t keep up with the demand of patients. As a latecomer to the MMJ game, they can look to other states for what and what not to do, but will they use it to their advantage?

In the financial sector, Amyris, a California-based company focused on wellness products, closed a deal potentially worth 300 million dollars with biotech startup Lavvan to research and develop synthetic cannabinoids. Analysts speculate the future of the industry is in the lab.

In international news, a new report revealed that health insurers in Germany covered 73.7 million euros worth of medical cannabis products in 2018. With the process of permitting domestic cultivation in the works, it seems the MMJ industry in the country will only grow larger.

And finally, canadian cannabis cultivation giant Tilray plans to focus on Europe and the U.S. for its upcoming expansion plans, and wind down cultivation in Canada. With a production facility in Portugal, and nascent opportunities in the EU, Tilray could be well poised for success.
